Back to 30 questions...

I've been distracted by so many other things lately that my 30 questions kind of got put on the back burner. But here we go again, starting with day 13: a letter to someone who has hurt you recently.

Dear Children,

You have the sharpest little butt bones of anyone I've ever known. Must you wiggle whenever you sit on my lap and grind those pointy little bums into my thigh? OUCH! Enough already! I love your cuddles, but you must sit still.

Love, Mommy

Okay, so that was a literal translation of the request...honestly, I'm not one to air hurts publicly. I'm a firm believer that grievances between two people should be handled between those people, not in your blog. ;)

Question #12

Day 12: How you found out about blogs and why you made one...

I'm not sure how I found out about blogs, exactly. People started making them, you started hearing about them all over the place, and I was young enough six years ago to figure it all out with minimal effort.

My very first blog focused almost solely on Rachael and her daily antics. She was maybe six months old then, and I felt the need to journal absolutely everything that she did, lest I forget a single thing. I was pretty good about updating it for a while, but eventually I slacked off...then started again...slacked...started again. You see where this is going, right?

Since then, I've had several blogs, and still maintain three. June Cleaver is my "main" blog, where I can be as random as I want to be. Then there's my homeschool blog, which is mostly followed by parents, in-laws, etc. and tells all about our adventures (and sometimes misadventures) in homeschooling. And finally, there's my scrapbooking blog - I do all of my scrapping in Photoshop now, and post my layouts here for my scrappy friends to see.

More than just a place for journaling details about my children, blogging has become an outlet for me - somewhere that I can (mostly) freely express what's on mind, things that bother me, funny things that I think about, and of course, a place to host neat giveaways and meet new people. Mostly, though, I just enjoy writing. So I do.

Question #11 - Friends

Okay, here goes with question #11...and it asks for...another picture of you and your friends.

Bleh. What's with all the pic requests, anyway?

Being that I hate pictures of myself and tend to avoid them at all costs, I'm going to go rogue on this one and post a friend-related topic instead. It's my blog and I can do that sort of thing, so there. It's actually not even totally off-topic, as I'll explain why I don't have scores upon scores of pictures of myself and my friends - at least, not current pictures. I'm sure there are many old school pics floating around here somewhere, but none that I'm up to unearthing and scanning tonight.

The reason that I don't have many recent pictures of myself with friends is that *gasp* I just plain don't have that many friends.

No, no...don't feel bad for me. It's not a totally bad thing. I have lots of really great acquaintances...people that I see pretty regularly, whose company I enjoy, who have kids that are my kids' friends, etc. But my definition of "friend" is pretty precise, and I only apply that title to a select few.

And why is that, you ask? Am I that terribly selective about who I call my friend? Do I have a three-mile long checklist of qualities that a person must possess before they're "good enough" to hang around with on a regular basis? Pffft, no, nothing like that. I do have a few criteria, of course - I think we all do. I wouldn't call my standards low by any means, but they're certainly not impossible.

That aside, there's a two-fold reason that I don't have many true friends.

1) I'm kind of a homebody. Okay, I'm a lot of a homebody. I'd rather be at my house, with my family, than anywhere else in the world. (Even though I dream about escaping from all of them pretty much on a daily basis, but you know I'd miss them if I actually got away.) Sure, I like to travel and see new things and spend time with other people, but not all the time. I have no urge to dip my fingers into everything that goes on locally, to be a part of every organization, to participate in every event, to have my kids in every possible activity. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that, but just the thought of all that go-go-go stresses me right out. My goal is for more calmness, for myself and my children. They'll have plenty of time to run in circles when they're older. I want to be with them and just enjoy them as much as possible while they're little.

This...quirk of mine isn't without drawbacks, of course. Because I'm not ever present at social events, I assume that others assume I'm anti-social or not interested in being around them (based on the shocking lack of invitations I receive of late.) That's not true, and it kind of stinks, but I'm not going to change my loathing of running-all-the-time in order to seek out scads of friendships.

2) My biggest requirement for forming a friendship is time. Now, this may seem to be in opposition to what I've just written, but it's not. The thing is, I'm never going to be your best friend overnight; I'm just not wired that way. To be my honest-to-goodness friend, you're going to have to get to know me. And yeah, that might not be the easiest thing to do, given that I'm not going to move into your house or talk to you on the phone all day. But if someone consistently shows interest in being a friend...checks in via email or text, calls sometimes, invites us to join them on playdates, that sort of thing...well, I'll certainly do the same for them. I'm a big believer in "do unto others", after all. And no, I don't mean that my potential friend has to do all the work, although the ones that do know me best understand that I'm not usually the one to plan the outings.

And that is why I claim two, count 'em two, really wonderful friends. They are ladies who understand my quirks and tolerate me anyway, and thank God for them. My friends are that much more precious to me because they are so few in number.

I'll admit, I do get down about it once in a while. After all, I try so hard to be friendly to everyone, and as a general rule, I bend over backward to help anyone who asks. On my down days, I wonder why on earth being friendly isn't enough for some people, why I'm not included in this activity or the other. Sometimes it does sting. But me being me, what else can I do about it?

Not a thing.

So I remind myself that each of my two most wonderful friends were received into my life at precisely the moment that I needed them most. Yes, I remember the exact dates, times and locations, and why I needed them so much. I remember the relief I felt within minutes of first meeting them. And I'm grateful for them, every single day.

There. Ask ME for another picture, why dontcha!

Question #10 and my first blog hop!

Sunday Strolling Blog Hop

Hey, check it out - my first blog hop! Thanks to The Chickenista for hosting it - I'm making a quick post and then hopping around to visit the other participants. Just visit her site to see the others!

If you came here from the blog hop...welcome! I'm Kristin, full-time homeschooling mom to two and pretty much the anti-June Cleaver. But I'm trying. Anyway, I've been working through a series of thirty questions that I stole from a friend's blog, and you're just in time for #10!

#10 - Songs you listen to when you are Happy, Sad, Bored, Hyped, Mad

Hmm, this may be the hardest one yet. As much as I love music, I don't listen to much, except the radio in the van. I haven't downloaded music in forever, so all the music on my computer is old, with the exception of the videos I have favorite-d on YouTube. So I'll answer the best I can, and NO LAUGHING!

Happy - anything fun! I like a really eclectic mix of music, so my happy songs range from country (Chicken Fried and Life Is A Highway come to mind), kiddie music (Laurie Berkner!), praise songs (Love Has Come, More Like Falling in Love, All of Creation, Beautiful Beautiful). Anything fun and upbeat that mirrors my mood.

Sad - this is the only emotion that really limits itself to one genre of music for me. When I'm down, I really only listen to contemporary Christian. A few favorites...Your Hands (this one is just perfect when you're sad), Praise You in This Storm, You Never Let Go, I'd Need a Savior, Better Than a Hallelujah. I have all of those saved on YouTube, so you can find them there if you're so inclined.

Bored - eh, if I'm bored, I'm bored and don't much care what I'm listening to. I usually just turn on the radio and flip around until I come across something that I recognize.

Hyped - same as happy!

Mad - heehee...nothing says "leave me alone" like blasting out some Johnny Cash! Folsom Prison Blues, A Boy Named Sue, Man in Black, I Got Stripes, Jackson (what a great bickering-spouse song!) Yeah. Mostly, I just start manically cleaning when I'm good and ticked off, but there's certainly a time and place for Johnny.

(Visitors...you can see my list of questions here, and I hope someone will join me! Please comment let me know where to visit if you do.)

* * * * *

HEY! Have you entered my giveaways yet? You can win a $10 gift certificate to Sweet 'N Sassy Bowtique (ends 9/6) or 250 really nice color business cards from Uprinting.com (ends 9/10).

In other news...my dad finally started his own blog!! I'm so excited to read what he has to say. Only one post so far, but go visit anyway...leave him some love and encouragement so he'll write more soon. :)

Question #9

Today's topic is "something you’re proud of in the past few days."

Well, I'm certainly proud that my house is still reasonably clean. It's usually trashed again in much less than a week.

But mostly, I'm proud of how well my little girl is doing with her school work. I don't take credit for it, except for the bookworm gene that she obviously received from me (since her daddy doesn't have one.) The child is just smart. She's reading on a fifth grade level, and she's only six and a half. She's doing fourth grade spelling work and third grade language arts. She can tell you the difference between an action verb and a helping verb, and knows to drop the silent e before adding -ing. She detests math, but it's not hard for her - inequalities = easy, and she can add 3-digit numbers that require her to carry tens and hundreds to the next column. Oh, and she wants her very own web show, just like iCarly, and frequently writes scripts for them.

Yep, I'm very proud of her. :)

Question #8

#8: Short term goals for this month and why...

I have several goals for this month - survival being foremost among them. With one child just back to (home)school and a 2-year-old to keep busy/entertained/alive in the meantime, "stressed" is my usual operating mode. But I do have goals beyond mere survival, and here they are.

a) Keep the housework under control. At the moment, my house is cleaner than usual, thanks to a recent visit from the in-laws. My goal is to keep it that way. However, the whole point of this blog is that I'm no June Cleaver around the house - rather, I would let it fall apart around me while I do schoolwork and fun things with the girls. Must...find...balance. My friend Brittany over at Short Change posts daily cleaning lists that I'm trying to adhere to...mostly. Days like yesterday really throw me for a loop, when we have plans all morning and then come home just in time to do a little bit of schoolwork, get showers and dressed, throw some food down our throats and run back out the door to church. Who has time to clean on those days?! I managed to wash the dishes and clear some clutter off of the kitchen table, and that just had to suffice.

b) Be a more patient mommy. Patience just is not my strong suit, especially when I have two children simultaneously screaming/crying/nagging/acting like little neanderthals. I just started a Wednesday night class at a nearby church (that I absolutely love) called My Bathtub Is Overflowing, But I Feel Drained. It's a small group comprised solely of moms, and is based on the book by the same name, which I already love even though I'm only three chapters in. Surely some fellowship time with other moms will help me to adjust my mommy attitudes a bit!

c) August was a slow month for my Scentsy biz, so my goal is to pick it up this month! (Actually, it's picked up quite nicely on its own, thanks to the new fall/winter scents. I've sold more in the past day and a half than I did in the whole month of August - WOOHOO!!) My goal for September is to maintain my Lead Consultant title...and who knows, maybe even move up another level. At any rate, the "work" I do this month will pay for our family's weekend beach getaway in October - and I'm soooo looking forward to it. Have I mentioned how much I love Scentsy?!

Question #7

Demand #7: a picture of someone/something that has the biggest impact on you.

Well, this is another easy one! Anyone who knows me at all can predict whose picture will pop up next:

Oh yes, these two little girls changed my entire world - all for the better, certainly for the crazier. I always, always, ever since I was a little girl myself, wanted to be a mommy someday and knew that I would absolutely adore my children. What I couldn't have possibly understood before I was blessed with them, was just how much love the heart can hold.

Question #6

Who is my favorite superhero, and why? Well, that's hardly a question.

Mrs. Incredible (a.k.a. Helen Parr) is pretty amazing...she's put her own superhero-ness on the back burner to be a wife and mother. Granted, her super stretchy ability comes in handy sometimes as she juggles her daily responsibilities, but she's still just a mom...until her family is in trouble, and then watch out.

Question #5

Before I touch on today's question, I just have to say...WOW. My first ever giveaway ends tonight, and there have been 85 entries so far. 85! I wasn't expecting such a great turnout, and I appreciate everyone that's stopped by to visit and enter. If you haven't entered yet, you still have about five hours!

Now...day #5 asks for a picture of somewhere I've been. Here's one:
My (wonderful) friend Cathy and I escaped for a girls' weekend to Asheville, NC back in June, and spent most of a day at the gorgeous Biltmore estate. I had been once before, but it was her first visit - and it was so nice to visit with someone who appreciates it as much as I do. This place is massive, and gorgeous - pictures just don't do it justice. If you ever get a chance to go...GO!!

And since I love my pictures...here's another place I've been, and can't wait to get back to:

Ohh, how I love DisneyWorld. My parents took me for the first time when I was seven, I went again at about 14, and we visited for the first time as a family in September 2007. Rachael was 3 1/2 and it was so perfect and magical for her. Even Gene loved it, although he had largely been dreading the trip. Now we're all ready to go back, and hope to take Milly for the first time in December 2011 - our plan is to celebrate her 4th birthday in the Magic Kingdom!

Question #4

Alrighty, time for the question du jour...a habit that I wish I didn't have.

UGH.

I try not to call attention to it, but here goes. I wish I didn't have the habit of picking at my fingernails and tearing them off. If you looked at my hands, you'd probably assume that I bite them - but I don't, never have. Actually, they're not as short as those of most nail biters I know. But they're still short and, to my mind, not terribly attractive.

I've been doing it ever since I was a little kid - maybe four or five. I don't remember exactly when or why it started, but I've tried several times to stop and it hasn't worked yet. I mostly do it when I'm nervous or bored, and then I barely even realize that I'm doing it...and it's awfully hard to stop doing something that's practically subconscious.

So just don't look at my hands, okay?

Question #3

Today's question demands a picture of me and my friends.

Have I ever mentioned that I hate pictures of myself?

And since I'm far too lazy to deal with the scanner at the moment, it's a picture of a picture. Just gonna have to deal. Here we are:

That's me on the right. Hey, no one said it had to be a recent picture.

* * * * *

In other news, I got to spend the evening with double my usual number of children, and loved every minute of it. My sister-in-law and her family are in town for her high school reunion. They live on the opposite side of the country (quite literally) so this was the first time I've met my six-month-old nephew. He's such a sweet, cuddly little guy...rocking a clean baby to sleep didn't do much for my resolve to only have two children, or for my notion that I wouldn't much want a little boy anyway. Meanwhile, my girls had a blast playing with their girl cousin, who is right in the middle of my two in age. I so wish they lived closer, so we could see them more than once a twice a year. (Grown-up in-laws included, of course...only they don't change as much from one year to the next!)

* * * * *

In other other news...have you entered my giveaway for a Black Heart Cherry tee or onesie? Just scroll down a few posts to find it - it ends on Monday night. Aaaaand, I have another giveaway lined up for next week too. Girl moms won't want to miss that one. ;)

Question #2

Okay...today's question is "the meaning behind your blog name."

Well, that's quite simple. Everyone knows who June Cleaver is. (Right?) She was the quintessential homemaker. You'd never find a speck of dirt on June's carpet. Her children were perfectly behaved at all times. She cooked amazing meals with perfectly-crusted apple pies for dessert, and she never had a hair out of place while managing it all.

Me? Between two children, a husband who works in a sawmill, and a giant dog, you'd be hard pressed some days to find a speck of carpet without dirt on it. My children behave okay in public, but they're like feral cats at home. I cook when I have to, but I don't enjoy it, and my meals are rarely as well-rounded as they should be. And the only way I can keep my hair in place is to throw it back into a ponytail...which I dare say June would have never considered.

So you see, she would be quite shocked if she were to walk into my house. The cleanliness doesn't come close to her standards...although I abide by the notion that my home is clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy. She would likely be enraged to find boxes of Hamburger Helper in the pantry, and would likely faint dead away to find me still in pajamas at 3 p.m.

And that is how my blog got its name. Not that she'll ever visit me, not that I'd want her to, not that she's even a real person. I'm just sayin'.

Question Numero Uno

Okay, here's day #1 of my 30 days of questions. Just scroll down one post to see what I'm talking about - and comment to let me know if you're joining me! :)

First of all, a recent picture of myself. Although I HATE pictures of myself. I guess this one turned out okay, even though I forgot to remove sunglasses from head first.

And since she's practically my mini-me, here's the sweet little photographer that snapped the picture of me:

Love that kid. :) And now for 15 "interesting" facts about myself...

1. I am named after a person whom I have never met. She was a co-worker of my mom's, and they didn't keep in touch. At least it's only my middle name.

2. My first car was an '83 Chevy Blazer that literally broke down every time I drove it out of town. My stepdad eventually paid for vanity plates that said FIX&FIX, because that's all we ever did to it. (We gave one to our mechanic when we finally sold the thing.)

3. I love being a Scentsy consultant, even though I said I'd never sell anything again after trying and failing at two other home-party businesses. I regularly leave business cards in gas pumps after fueling up the mom-mobile. Makes me feel like a rebel. >:)

4. I live in the same house where I grew up, only now the master suite is mine. I still hate the walls in my old bedroom (not very girly), although at least now the carpet is better.

5. My second daughter was born in a pool in our living room. 9 lbs, 6 ozs and drug-free, baby! (Yeah, I'm a little proud of that one.)

6. I got sick once after eating taco salad, and have never been able to eat another one. Ditto to oysters. I had a close call with spaghetti, but managed to overcome. (Gene had a similar experience with tuna, which irritates me because I love tuna, but can't eat it around him.)

7. Our high school band marched in the Magic Music Days parade at DisneyWorld. It was April. We wore wool uniforms. It would've been pretty cool, except we were all sweating buckets and my hat kept falling into my eyes, so I really didn't get to see much of it.

8. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. For now, I'm perfectly, completely thrilled to be a full-time mom and a homeschooler...a "job" that should remain steady for at least the next fifteen years or so. After that - or maybe just when the girls are older - I think I'd like to study midwifery.

9. Here's one of my mom's brags on me: I read 500 books for a summer reading program at our local library during the summer before I started kindergarten. This brag was recently bested by my own child, who read more than 7000 pages for this summer's reading program.

10. Out of five super-wonderful friends that I would classify as "bests" over the course of my life to date, only one has not had a name/nickname beginning with the letter S.

11. I am an absolute night owl who would gladly stay up past 2 a.m. every night and sleep till 11 or so the following morning, if my darling family would allow me to adhere to such a schedule. They do not. So I try to go to bed at a more reasonable hour, knowing I'll be dragged out of it against my will no later than 8:30.

12. I'm still not sure whether I want more children. Gene is firmly against, but then, he didn't much want Milly either and is glad now that I insisted. ;) Some days I very much want one more, other days it sounds like a horrible idea. It mostly sounds like a horrible idea, until I get my hands on someone else's baby.

13. Gene and I have known each other for nearly our entire lives, since our families went to the same church. He was a big, disgusting bully with an ugly bowl haircut when I was little, and I detested the sight of him. Until I turned 16, and then he suddenly became cute.

14. I adore my minivan. ADORE it! I'll likely be one of those little old ladies driving a minivan just because. Old Gene will probably ride in the back so he can watch movies while I drive, since he doesn't get to do as much of that as he'd like at present.

15. I'm not very good at making "interesting facts" lists about myself, or even talking about myself in general, as I mostly consider myself to be rather uninteresting. (This seems to be confirmed by most people, which could simply be a product of my own low self-esteem issues.) But here it is, 15 things...perhaps interesting, definitely random. :)

Is it still stealing if you steal something stolen?

Say THAT five times fast! :)

Okay, so I saw something fun over at my friend Trish's blog - something that she stole from her friend first. And since it was originally stolen, I didn't feel so bad about stealing it again. It'll help me remember to check in every day too, which is just a nice little bonus. In a nutshell, I'm running away (giggling maniacally all the while) with a list of 30 questions, one per day for a month. If the month happens to have 30 days. And since I'm not starting on the first day of the month, it hardly even matters, does it? Here's a preview of the topics I'll be tackling:

Day 28- A picture of you last year and now, how have you changed since then?
Day 29- In this past month, what have you learned
Day 30- Who are you?

Sounds like fun, right? Well, it will be for me...I mean, who doesn't like talking about themselves? If you think it sounds like fun, I challenge you to answer these questions too...it's not like you really have to remember to do them all in 30 consecutive days or anything. Just get 'em done eventually. And comment here to let me know you're stealing my stolen idea, so I can come and read. :)
